Jim Delahanty

Jim Delahanty was part of the famous Delahanty Brothers. The Delahanty famliy consisted of 7 brothers of which 5 played in the major leagues. They were Ed, Frank, Joe, Tom, and Jim, the second youngest. Jim had a long playing playing career as a journeyman infielder. He played for 13 seasons in the majors for 8 different teams. He broke into the majors with the Chicago Cubs in 1901, then went to the New York Giants in 1902, and then to the Boston Braves in 1904. From there he went to Cincinnati, the St. Louis Browns, the Washington Senators, and the Detroit Tigers before finally ending his career with the Brooklyn Tip Tops.

Jim did not finish his last season with Brooklyn. Instead he went to the Federal League's minor league, the New England Colonial League. There he was player/manager for the Hartford club. Jim managed the team to the championship while leading the league in hitting with a .379 average.

The Federal League was not Jim's first foray into "outlaw" ball. In May of 1912, Jim was playing for the Detroit Tigers. It involved an incident where Ty Cobb got into a brawl with a New York Highland fan. Cobb was suspended by American League Czar, Ban Johnson. When his teammates heard this, the Detroit Tigers did not agree with this and staged a strike on May 18th. There were rumors that Jim as well as 4 other strikers (Cobb, Sam Crawford, George Mullin, and Donnie Bush) had signed contracts to play for the United States League. But the strike was quickly ended after 1 game was played with replacement players for Detroit.
