The Brooklyn team was owned by millionaire Robert Ward. He was also the owner of Tip Top bakeries and in order to help advertise his bread, nicknamed the team the Tip Tops. Even though the Brooklyn uniforms had a patch with the Tip Top name on the sleeve, many sportwriters were offended by the blatant advertising that they referred to the team as the Brookfeds.

The Brooklyn team finished 4th in 1914.

In 1915, Brooklyn finished 7th despite having star outfielder Benny Kauf on the team. Kauf had been transferred from the Indianapolis team after the 1914 season by Federal League president, James Gilmore to boost the Brooklyn franchise. It was thought that by showcasing the league's star player in New York city would help the franchise and the league.
